rays. Healthy collagen proteins gently
mesh with each other, giving the skin

Free-radical damage causes collagen
protein molecules to break down and
re-link in a different way, in a process
known as cross-linking that causes
normally supple collagen to become stiff
and hard, manifesting as wrinkles.

Inositol
|

Research reported
on November 5, 2007 at the American
Association for Cancer Research
Centennial Conference on Translational
Cancer Medicine indicates that inositol
as well as inositol hexaphosphate (IP6)
helps protect the body’s genetic
material from the damaging effects of
ultraviolet
B (UVB) and other radiation. University
of Maryland School of Medicine professor
of pathology Abulkalam M. Shamsuddin, MD
reported that these antioxidant
nutrients protect the cells’ DNA from
radiation-generated free radicals. In
addition to providing protection from
UVB, inositol could be used to help
decrease the side effects of cancer
radiation therapy by increasing the
treatment’s potency against malignant
cells while protecting those that are
healthy.

SOD (superoxide
dismutase)
|
|
SOD’s versatility is
demonstrated by its ability to protect
the skin against damage caused by
ultraviolet light. In a randomized,
double-blind, placebo-controlled study,
scientists exposed the forearms of 50
volunteers to ultraviolet light once a
week for four weeks. Starting two to
three days before the first exposure,
the participants took a daily supplement
containing either GliSODin® or placebo.
Individuals receiving GliSODin®, even
those with fair skin, were able to
withstand eight times more ultraviolet
light exposure before they developed
sunburn compared to those who received
placebo. Other benefits of GliSODin®
were less skin inflammation and more
rapid healing of redness after burning
occurred. The scientists concluded that
GliSODin® effectively prevents the
consequences of oxidative stress
resulting from excessive sun exposure,
and that this effect is particularly
important for fair-skinned individuals.
